Background of the Study
Environmental pollution has become a pressing public health concern, with far-reaching consequences on maternal health, particularly in industrial and urban areas such as Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State (Olumide, 2023). Rapid industrialization and urban sprawl have led to increased exposure to harmful pollutants like heavy metals, particulate matter, and chemical waste—factors linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth and low birth weight (Ekwueme, 2024). Maternal exposure to these contaminants also elevates risks of respiratory and cardiovascular issues. This study examines the correlation between environmental pollution and maternal health, exploring both direct and indirect effects. In addition, socio-economic determinants such as healthcare access and education may modify these impacts. Recent research underscores the importance of sustainable interventions to reduce pollutant exposure among pregnant women (Ajayi, 2025). Comprehensive assessment of environmental data, health records, and community insights is essential for developing targeted policies that safeguard maternal health in polluted environments (Nwankwo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Maternal health in Eleme is increasingly jeopardized by environmental pollution, yet limited empirical evidence exists linking specific pollutants to adverse outcomes (Adebola, 2024). The existing healthcare framework is insufficient to address the risks posed by industrial contaminants, leading to elevated maternal complications and chronic conditions. Furthermore, a lack of comprehensive environmental health policies exacerbates these issues, leaving pregnant women particularly vulnerable. This study seeks to quantify the relationship between pollutant exposure and maternal health outcomes and to propose interventions that mitigate these risks (Babatunde, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the levels of environmental pollutants in Eleme.

To examine the impact of these pollutants on maternal health outcomes.

To recommend effective interventions for reducing pollutant exposure among pregnant women.

Research Questions:

What are the predominant pollutants affecting Eleme Local Government Area?

How do these pollutants impact maternal health during pregnancy?

What strategies can mitigate the negative effects of environmental pollution on maternal health?

Research Hypotheses:

Higher levels of environmental pollutants are associated with increased maternal health complications.

Maternal exposure to industrial pollutants significantly elevates the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Enhanced environmental regulations and health interventions reduce the negative impact on maternal health.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it bridges the gap between environmental health and maternal care by providing empirical evidence of pollution-related risks. The findings will support policy reforms and targeted interventions to protect maternal health in Eleme, thereby contributing to improved outcomes for mothers and infants (Bello, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Environmental pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the environment.

Maternal health: The health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

Adverse pregnancy outcomes: Negative health effects experienced by the mother or child due to pregnancy complications.
